Fulbert-Chartres: The Association Editorial

When night comes to the oceans' shores, beacons light up one after another to guide seamen to their ship’s far destination...

On the brink of the world's third millennium, Fulbert of Chartres is one of the beacons of mankind.  He lights our way to new realities and shows us how to live them.

A thousand years ago, in October 1006, this man from afar became Bishop to the people of Chartres. They had first welcomed him as the Master of their famous schools. It was an immense responsibility at the time, and decisive for the future of our institutions.

Let us rediscover Fulbert of Chartres. Through his writings and his activities as a builder of cathedrals he showed himself to be an astonishingly modern man.  He was a true link between the ages, at the passage from the first to the second millennium of European history.  His modernity is reflected in his sensibilities as a poet and musician, his passion for knowledge, his talents as a mediator in a troubled society and his faith in man and in God.

The nationwide commemoration of Fulbert of Chartres in 2006, initiated in the context of efforts to discover the history of our institutions, is an invitation to find out who this man really was.

We invite you, visitors to this site, to meet us in September and October 2006 in Chartres, a city with a full artistic and spiritual life, steeped in our civilisation and famous for the welcome it gives to all.  We'll be waiting for you!  The following pages are just a taste of what you will find in Chartres.

Like Fulbert's friends from France, Hungary, Denmark, England, Italy, Spain, Rhineland and elsewhere, come to Chartres from far and wide to experience the joy of rediscovering this great man and History.
